what is /lit/ opinion on Moby Dick?

>> No.6514404

Nice
Epic
I like it

One of the greatest American novels of all time, highly influential, and still holds up today. Also the prose is second to none. Might re-read it soon.

Moby Dick Good Book

Epic

Aside from the masterful prose, I don't really get what all the hub bub about it is. I feel like its reputation as gotten blown up to the point no one wants to just come out and admit "It's not THAT great"

Prove me wrong /lit/

Again, I want to iterate that the prose is indeed masterful, but otherwise its a rather bland story about a bunch of guys on a ship.

All good art goes beyond the surface of its subject matter.

first of all, it depends on what you compare it to
moby dick v. 99.9% of books written, moby dick clearly blows the shit out of all of them no contest

Now, if you take the top books of each language and take great care in judging them Moby Dick may be seen as lacking, reasonably

Also, it depends on the value judgement you make on your art. It seems to me that the same people that adore and pontificate on Shakespeare would also prefer Moby Dick over War and Peace or something.

Personal opinion time: I have very high standards and don't really like most books. My guilty pleasure is music so I don't have to like most books and I do find Moby Dick lacking, I think The Confidence Man is better, more direct better characters etc.

If you don't realize how Moby Dick sheds light on the nature of human ambition and failure then you're not getting it and that's too bad

let's say for example: by some sheer stroke of luck one figured out the main theme of Moby Dick, the idea of ambition and failure and then read Moby Dick, would it be as striking? No, obviously not. So it may be possible, although not likely, that that is the reason people are not as amazed as you.
