The more you look at it, the more colors you find, the more shapes you find, you beggining to imagine the path of his stick dropping the paint, but when you try to follow it in a linear fashion you get lost really easy. Sometimes you're drawn to look at the whole thing at once as a single mass, sometimes you focus on an area and then move to another. You can search for the first layers of paint as if you were looking at the darkest point in the night sky. There is energy and motion all throughout the canvas, nothing looks static, there is no place to settle down. I don't know, it's just beautiful to look at. If you have the chance to see one of the best ones live, do it. I was shocked the first time I saw it, it has a massive presence.

Yeah, I think there is somewhere, but anyway you wouldn't be able to post on /lit/ anyway. I have a big collection of paintings in high res, but I'm lazy to contribute to the art threads because I have to shrink them down or find them someplace else. That being said, I think it is better for people to just move their asses and go more to the museums. High res is great, I'm addicted to it and all for its spread but it can also give the illusion that it substitutes the real piece.

Killing being fun is definitely one thing, and you're silly to knock that, since it's a fairly natural pleasure for just about everyone on earth. But there's more than just that, and more than just Halo. You gain a sense of personal achievement and loss while playing, a sense of obligation and responsibility if playing with or against others, a sense of adventure as you explore new areas and overcome obstacles, a sense of beauty as you first pop in and play a new game with top of the line visual and audio effects or watch more being rendered on screen at once than was possible 5 years ago technologically, a sense of wonder and curiosity as you engage with new things in the game like different obstacles or objects, or tricks in the mechanics.

There is a lot, but overall the most important thing is just the emphasis on individualism in games. All else is pretty trivial or a subcategory in comparison. You can learn more about yourself, being human, and being an individual through games than through looking at a painting or listening to a song.

Your evaluation really just stems from being a spectator rather than a player. Bottom line. You call it being immersed in fantasy where there is no struggle or risk, but to a player that is not true at all. The "fantasy" and the struggle and risks in the game become the only thing real when playing.

Also, another indication of the maturity of this kind of art is the fact that they ARE still called games. Could a younger, less developed society have created this kind of art, or even wanted to? When you are younger and less mature, you tend to take things more seriously, because you are still striving to make something of yourself, or defend yourself from stronger/more mature forces. Playtime becomes less important. Only from an already strong and mature point of view can there be a desire to play again. It's like Nietzsche's metamorphoses of the spirit.

I see this argument a lot, but I think it's fundamentally unsound.

Like, the word hippo isn't offensive unless you use it in the context of an insult, like calling Jeffrey Ross a melting hippo. Just because anything can potentially be art doesn't mean it's completely meaningless to call something art.

It's more of a context-based potentiality, and anyone who made the argument that the label is "useless", I secretly suspect, already knows about this caveat and really just want to be annoying.

"Anything can be art" should be understood in the same manner as the phrase "Life is subjective." In other words, anything can be art because everyone is different and everyone can and will attribute different things to the term art, because art is a subjective term. It is more an adjective than a noun if you think of it as pertaining to a quality rather than the object itself. However, since everyone finds art in different places, to each individual "anything can be art" is never held true, unless you are some Nietzschean god who elevated to a level of understanding where you are capable of mentally grasping all of life as a beautiful spectacle to behold. But since basically no one is that, you will not find anyone who truly holds "anything can be art" in their belief system, despite what they tell you, because there are some things in life they will personally NEVER regard as art.
