Dear /lit/, I want to read the Iliad and the Odyssey. Not sure which translation is the best, does anyone have any suggestions? I've read that Lattimore is the closest in spirit to the actual book, would you guys agree with this?

I'm reading Fagles' right now. He's pretty good, his style is very colloquial but it's still very much in-line with the original latin. One issue is that the hardback versions have crinkle-cut pages and the penguin classics paperbacks are really cheaply made (my copy of the iliad is fucking hard to read 'cause it flops around all over the place) but if you're not picky about aesthetics they're really great translations.

He also translated the Aeneid if you feel like reading that later (although I wouldn't recommend it).
