I didn't really drop Herodotus. I read a couple pages of it every now and then. It's way too jumpy. Its occasionally a fun read but it can become one of the driest things ever. Haven't gotten to Nietzsche yet (I only buy used, so whoever owned it before me must have dropped it and sold it to the used book store), but I read the other two.

My first time posting in /lit/.

These pics were taken after a massive purge. I have about three-four banker's boxes in the basement waiting to be donated.

I buy books only after I've read them. I borrow first from the library and, if I like it enough that I'll read it a second time, I'll buy it again.

There are some stragglers here, though. I've read about 90% of the books in my pics.

>Herodotus was a pretty guiilable man who pretty much included everything he was told, even if it was a blatant lie, so don't exactly take everything written in this text at face value

So how about the fact that Herodotus was living in a time period where the entire World's creatures were not fully known yet, the cultures either. It's an interesting read because it shows how the development of civilization developed different trends and cultures more than anything else. The best war Herodotus described was the Persian, however the Skythian conquest was also enjoyable. And who couldn't get enveloped in the Skythian culture? And the race of Cyclops living in the north? And the giant ants? It's a story based on the limits of the human imagination and how they apply to our understanding of the known universe. A sociological treatise on war and civilization, with myths to boot. Perhaps my favorite book ever, besides The Wealth of Nations.

hahaha holy shit. That totally turns the image into something eerily beautiful. It could be the most elaborate troll this board has seen. Why would somebody with taste that bad (a shelf full of King/GoT) read Franzen, specifically the Corrections? I'm not Franzen's boyfriend or anything, but a 'literary' novel about a family with problems? Doesn't seem like a Stephen King reader would take to it. My guess is a.) some patrish dude was reading The Corrections on the same day he was visiting his autistic friend and saw an opportunity to create the most subtle troll in /lit/'s history or b.) the patrish dude, having read much of it in a cafe before coming and deciding that Franzen's maximalism just wasn't relevant to his interests, gave the Corrections to his autistic friend, who then buried it on the bottom of his escapist bullshit bookshelf next to some manga, where it will remain until the autistic friend notices it in one of the images he posted in a materialist show and tell thread on a Taiwanese David Foster Wallace bulletin board
