/lit/ is starting with the greeks just a meme or is it recommended to actually read all these in order to understand more contemporary literature?

IIRC It's really more for understanding philosophy but it will help you understand literature.

The order is off. You should have read the dramatists before you start on Aristophanes as he frequently references them.

>Herodotus was a gullible man

This chart was clearly made by someone who has never read Herodotus.

I started with the greeks this month, now half way through Iliad

what i've learned:

> women, or honor related to possessing women, is the source of all conflict
> the gods who determine the outcome of said conflicts have the wisdom and maturity of human teen girls
> in battle you will either get a small baby cut or be grotesquely disemboweled

I have to admit that Hesiod is awful compared to the rest, but still good to read if you want to study the Greeks. His two poems combined are only like 100 pages.

What's the problem with Hesiod? He's so conversational
