Besides Fear and Loathing and Hells Angels, are any of his other works of notable interest?

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail is awesome, I've heard good stuff about The Great Shark hunt but I've yet to check it out.

I wish he had just written picaresque novels.

Where do you get the idea that he didn't?

The most essential volume is The Great Shark Hunt. If I could only take 6 books to a desert island, it would be one of them.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is a great book in and of itself, but if you happen to be a student of US political history it is AMAZING. You'll recognize at least a decent chunk of the names in it, and it's a fascinating chronicle of basically the rebirth of the American right. It all started with Nixon's 1972 win, and Carter was only a speedbump.

Plus Thompson inserts himself into the stories and it's intensely amusing. You'll love the bits with Ed Muskie.

Fear and Loathing is not even good
