Just picked this up at a book drive

I've only read Lot 49 (and enjoyed it) and I've heard that Vineland is best enjoyed after reading some of his other work

Would it be better to read V or Gravity's Rainbow before diving into this?

First one I went through and it was a fun read. It's pretty easy to follow, but I'm probably going to read it again to catch things I missed.

I think people say that because it's supposed to be one of his weakest books rather than because you need to have a background in his writing to understand it.

I didn't really like it, but it's a good progression--this, Inherent Vice and Bleeding Edge are pretty accessible, Mason & Dixon is a little more difficult, and V, Gravity's Rainbow and Against the Day are considerably more abstruse.

Slow Learner is non-essential and only for completists.
