I think you're missing that comically overkill racism was common for that time. Maybe not among writers, but most people were that way. Hell, it didn't just apply to black people either, people were highly racist against irish and catholics, and they were white.

My great aunt was born in 1910. She had a lawn jockey in her front lawn until she died in 2005. She was seriously just like "What? what's the big fucking deal?" any time people brought it up.
