Which version of Ulysses would /lit/ recommend? Every other one claims to be the "definitive" or "unabridged" one.

Pic is the one I'm borrowing.

Vintage

The one that has the letter from joyce and all the original text the way it's supposed to be (no chapter names wtf is that shit anyways?) and notes on the pages indicating text that had been removed when it was censored.

While we are at it, what about Dubliners? Will any edition do fine?

Finnegan's Wake too, since we're here anyway.

the penguin centennial one has nice notes and tells you what characters are in both Dubliners and Ulysses but it looks like shit lol

you don't borrow that, you have to own it

For the most part, but I have an older Viking edition and it's riddled with typos, especially in The Dead.

Get one with annotations ideally, but as opposed to the other works it's not essential.

I read that copy it's pretty cool, I like that the text is small and the whole thing feels like a hieroglyph you have to decipher.

Proceed hastefully, anon.

Do you have the Joyce Collection Viking?

There doesn't seem to be any real consensus so far, so I'm going with this

I have this one, don´t know much about english/american publishers (I am from Latin America) but I guess it´s good. Besides I bought it for like the equivalent of 1 dollar in a canadian couple Bazar.

That's the one I have, and it reads just fine (as 'fine' as one can read Joyce, I suppose).

It's got an extensive list of supporting notes, as well as the schema thing which details each episode, the techniques used, the colour/symbol/etc etc

>> No.6470752

The 1934 Random House text is the best, I think.

I have this version. Is it worth reading or should I sell it? I actually have the Penguin versions of Dubliners and APotAaaYM as well.

Any of the ones based on the Odyssey Press, Bodley Head or Random House editions are fine. I believe the Penguin annotations are just based on Gifford's. Should be fine.

>> No.6471131

>>6469897
That one is riddled with typos, it was basically rushed the printer and is not good. The 1934 version is the best, I would say, has mistakes but is closest to being perfect and untainted. It was the definitive for a while until someone named Gabler made corrections and published a new one which is now the definitive for scholars but he made a lot of changes, some of them significant and many people have accused him of changing the meaning.

So since I'd rather read Joyce than Gabler, get the 1934 edition, not the 1922.

>> No.6471141

Alma Classics have started selling the 1939 text. Anyone know how it differs from the 1934 text?

These are both by Vintage. Do they differ in any way? Also how's the Everymans Library? All three of these are from Knopf so I'm wondering how they differ.

I own this one, cover is pretty magnificent but not sure on the text.

>> No.6473299

If you want to facilitate your reading experience from an academic perspective (that is, you're actually 'reading' the text as opposed to merely skimming over it whilst not understanding half of the references), then I'd recommend the Gabler edition, which has line numbers. Also, I highly recommend to have as a companion book Ulysses Annotated, by Gifford. Also, keep an eye on Gilbert's schema. These three texts will help you locate and understand all the references.

Sincerely, someone who's actually studied Ulysses at university level.

Vintage 1961 is the best.
