I remember Hedges saying something about how one of the biggest problems OWS faced (other than its overall shittyness) was that the white intellectual didn't really have credibility with the blacks, because they never seemed to care about them before and were coming off as opportunistic when they were trying to get them on their side.

It is pretty understandable if you think about it, because no matter how sure *you* are of your convictions and how you defend their case in your spaces of routine, for them you're just one of too many white faces that pop up when there's a revolt, do their little routine and they disappear back into middle classes.

This is probably where you should start looking into it. There's no point in going to poor areas when there's some crisis and yell REVOLUTION because they don't care. Religious people for example can mobilize blacks at will because they are always there even when none of the blacks are giving a shit about politics. It's this lack of becoming a familiar face that makes cooperation difficult. But white intellectuals don't want to be a "familiar" face, they want to be a respected, worshipped, "you're one of the good ones!" faces.
