Anyone else think he's based? In Discourses he says have one party for the aristocracy that stays in power, but another one for the plebs so they at least think they have some representation and stay complacent. Seems like you could actually set up a workable aristocracy that way, it just has to be done right.

Machiavelli is a very nuanced writer. Like the other early moderns, you have to consider, not only standard rhetorical and didactic approaches, but also that they were constantly evading censors by obscuring their real messages.
