I'm trying to teach myself Attic Greek. Would a kind person tell me if the following pronunciations I'm using are correct?
ἀρετή - AH-RET-AY
ἀρχή - AR-KAY
γνώμη - GNO-MAY
δίkη - DEE-KAY
ἑορτή - EH-OR-TAY
λύπη - LUU-PAY
μηχανή - MAY-KA-NAY
νίkη - NEE-KAY
σιγή - SEE-GAY
τέχνη - TECH-NAY
Thank you for any help. This language is pretty challenging, but I'm thinking that an hour or so of studying every day will allow me to improve.

Why is it that so many people browsing /lit/ are this immature? Ironic or not, these kind of things are still annoying and a waste of time to post.

Almost all the iotas and upsilons are short; why have you elongated them so?

I studied attic Greek and that is how I always pronounced those words as did others in my class, so I'm gonna say yes.

Can you pronounce the aspirated velar spirant 'kh'? Because that's the sound of the χ letter. Also, get your accents and vowel duration right.

A bar over a syllable denotes long vowel, and capitalisation indicates accent.

ἀρετή - a•re•TĒ
ἀρχή - ar•KHĒ
γνώμη - GNŌ•me
δίkη - DI•kē
ἑορτή - he•or•TĒ
λύπη - LU•pē
μηχανή - me•kha•NĒ
νίkη - NI•gē
σιγή - si•GĒ
τέχνη - TEKH•nē

Am I supposed to slightly roll the letter 'rho'? I recall reading that somewhere but can't remember the exact source. Can you also provide me with a resource for finding out what different letters with different accent marks sound like? It's kind of embarrassing, but I'm clueless when it comes to accents.

>>6425291
You only roll the rho if it has a rough breathing mark, like in ῥᾴδιος

>> No.6425335

>>6425291
There are only two accents - the acute and the grave - and these behave like accents in any other language. Breathing marks signify whether or not you add an aspirate to the letter, which is why you see them in any word that starts with a vowel or diphthong - Ὅμηρος is pronounced Homeros because the omicron has a rough breathing mark. If it has a smooth breathing mark, you pronounce it as it is normally pronounced. The circumflex mark just represents contraction - i.e. the omission of an implied letter; you pronounce it as a long syllable.

What textbook are you using?

I'm actually using some subreddit somebody here recommended to me that goes over the basics. You can check it out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IntroAncientGreek#page=2.. I was previously using Pharr's book on Homeric Greek until somebody told me that I'd be better off first learning the basics of Attic. I hope people here don't disregard or mock the subreddit I linked, as it seems to be doing just fine.

tbh you should probably download or buy something like Hansen & Quinn (google search it and you can find some illegal scans, or buy a used copy for like $10) or Athenaze (same as above). H&Q teaches you the most important things right up front and really makes you work, but is a bit lacking on actual readings. Athenaze on the other hand isn't too good on grammar but has a ton of readings designed to ease you into reading actual texts.
