When writing, should one just write with a vague premise and expand on it as you go or plan things out quite heavily beforehand?
Also, any good books on writing?

Sounds like a plan.

I'm just a humble anon, but in my limited writing experience it's been so much easier to have an outline established before getting to the pulp of my writing. I just use an excel spreadsheet to order chronological events, character developments, and general ideas before sitting down, picking out a square, and just writing a chapter or two on it.

Pic related, I just made a plot chart a few days ago.

For shorter stuff or things you've been thinking about for some time I believe just jumping into it is the best course. But if it's a longer work or something you want to have a certain structure or a very specific progression an outline can help you get better results and work faster.

This is good >>6420259 but you can also buy those small library cards and write there. If you have a fluid structure you can switch them around over a table or the floor and quickly see how it would go.

Do you write in chronological order?

Not necessarily. It's easy to go back and edit anything that feels messy when you're done with the first complete draft.

It's a yes or no question.

"Sounds like a plan" is an affirmative btw. Maybe it's just from my family.

Begginners should practice automatic writing more and lose the fear of writing shit. The problem of what is the best approach to writing comes after you've broken that barrier.

nope

We have a simplified version around here, but even this ones can work (if you re use the columns)

I could see it work with something like
>Author
General title
>Title
Chapter title
>Borrower's name
General description
>Date due
How many words you have.
