Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is really short. But then afterwards you have to forget all that and read Philosophical Investigations and maybe On Certainty.

Short and nearly impossible to read unless you enjoy symbolic logic.

Read the first 10 lines of Ecclesiastes. Western Philosophy for the last thousand years or so has simply been an autistic hug box. Other than neechah and hume and some of the american pragmatists. I think Ts Eliot was correct when he said Modern people think they are so clever when they are completely ignoring the wisdom of the ancients.

It might sound pleby, but there is a nice little companion reader titled "How To Read Wittgenstein."

I picked it up after first being introduced to Wittgenstein in my Philosophy 101 class. Very useful stuff. First half cover the Tractatus, the second covers Philosophical Investigations. It's brief, and the author admits he is making just one interpretation of very dense and difficult work.

True Nietzschean philosophers would be philo-physicians

I'd recommend the biography The Duty of Genius by Ray Monk. Wittgenstein had a fascinating life, and Monk does a great job at describing his philosophy at various points in his life. From there, jump into whichever of his works interested you most.

If, however, you would rather start with a work of pure philosophy, read Philosophical Investigations. It's pretty accessible, though challenging. If you still are craving more Witty, tackle the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. In order to understand it YOU MUST READ SECONDARY literature. In particular, the Cambridge Companion to Wittgenstein has a very clear chapter on the TLP, but really, any dusty old book you can find in the library or bookstore will be a huge help. The secondary literature is essential to clarifying the terms that Wittgenstein never really defines throughout the text, such as "case" or "proposition." If you're dedicated to understanding TLP fully, however, you will have some basis in symbolic logic. Either take a class on it or read Rudolf Carnap's Introduction to Symbolic logic. While it is possible to understand the sense of Wittgenstein's arguments without knowing logical symbolism, without it you'll be missing a huge chunk of his reasoning for why the picture theory of language is necessary.

Most importantly, to appreciate Wittgenstein, DO NOT DISMISS THE TRACTATUS BECAUSE WITTGENSTEIN "REJECTED" IT WITH PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATIONS. Sure, Witty himself said that PI's language games were a better explanation than the TLP for how language works, but he still held the earlier work in high regard. The TLP is an immensely beautiful achievement, even if PI is "better," but regardless, there is so much to learn from it.
