Was Nietzsche's work more of a direct influence on Nazi ideology or more of a "recommended for you" of the movement/upheaval of Germany?

More the latter. Some of the philosophers of the Third Reich really appreciated him (Like Heidegger, Baeumler, and Alfred Rosenberg).

The philosophers aside, most of the ideology was shaped around the ideas of Joseph-Arthur de Gobineau, Houston Stewart Chamberlain, and Wagner.

There's one crazy lady who wrote a book about the connection between Mein Kampf and Wittgenstein. Apparently, Hitler and Wittgenstein attended the same elementary in Vienna at roughly the same time and most of the negative stereotypes about jews in Mein Kampf match up perfectly with descriptions of young Wittgenstein. So, the theory is annoying little Wittgenstein pissed off Hitler (as he would so many people), which planted the seed for Hitler's hatred for jews.
