Last one hit bump limit - evidently an interesting topic. I really enjoyed it. So keep em coming.

What's the story with him and franzen?
I've heard bits and pieces. Franzen shit on his grave?

>> No.6399168

why did he have to die

I really, really, really like this thread

>> No.6399177

They were buds, DFW went to bat for him a few times even though he probably shouldn't have, after he hanged himself Franzen started talking shit in Harper's and insinuated that DFW killed himself in part so he could become legend. Which is probably true.

Kind of a dick, if you ask me.

Franzen pretended to be Wallace's friend so that he could learn from him how to be a successful novelist, but he secretly resented Wallace all along and only felt brave enough to express this publicly once Wallace was dead.

>> No.6399182

>>6399161
what... no. franzen and he were best friends. people dislike franzen generally, so when franzen says some less than hagiographic things when writing about him after his death, people freak out.

said stuff like (approx.) "dave and i disagreed about whether you had to be 100% truthful when doing nonfiction" (fair, since wallace really did make up a lot of his reporting for comedy); also said stuff like (approx.) "no one ever asks where he found such privileged access to the minds of misogynists" (also fair, from what ive gathered from reading everything out there about him).

Friends with the competitive rivalry of friends working in the same creative field with one doing much better than the other. Franzen was a bit of an asshole about Wallace after he died, but he probably deserved it to a degree. I wouldn't hold it against him.

>> No.6399194

>>6399183
mmm... not clear which was doing better. infinite jest sold pretty well, and wallace gained a cult following among the sort of people who browse /lit/... franzen's corrections outsold IJ many times over, franzen became way more famous than wallace, and the critics were way more unanimous with their praise of the corrections than they were with IJ.

depends on what you call winning.

That's some differing claims.

>DW and JF were friends and rose to popularity, but DW eclipsed JF.
>When DW died JF said things that weren't complimentary so it was taken as jealous digs

Do you think JF was trying to be funny and it was too subtle?

It's like Jay-Z and Nas. Jay-Z (Franzen) may have surpassed Nas (DFW) in terms of record sales, but both men know deep down who is the greater artist.
