You should take a couple humanities courses at your local Community college. Or maybe just buy some old Humanities textbooks for cheap. You both should read up on some lit theories.

Try reading Raymond Carver. He leaves the door very open for you to insert interpretations, and in those interpretations that you make you can recognize the intentions hidden in the work,
