I've never read her, but I've never understood these "dramaturgical" sociological theories, or the distinction between "performance" and "performative." Seems like fancy pomo buzzwords with no falsifiability.

Don't get me wrong, I think gender is socialized and not completely 100% based on biological sex, but it seems that we can just say that plainly, instead of simply repackaging that observation in mystifying language.

But that's not how you get undergrads to cite you and your books to sell, I suppose.

And that's something to criticize about Foucault. But it's not like age of Consent is a universal standard, in my mind, it should be 16, but everyone tends to differ and it's controversial. Aside from that, like I understand he isn't everyone's cup of tea, but talking out your ass about these issues isn't helping anyone.

it isn't mystifying, so much as it is uncomfortably specific. Part of the trouble with contemporary theory is not that its unfalsifiable or that it's obscurantist, but it's simply built ontop of such a complex web of presupposed knowledge that it would be pointless to talk about in laymens terms.
