he is deffinatly overrated, he is still an amazing writer especially from a technical standpoint, but I know many people who have only ever read Tolkien and immortalize him as the one writer to rule them all despite having never read any real "high" lit. if I had to vote on a more overrated writer I would go with Tolkien 2.0

Overrated is a word used by inadequate people to make other people feel inferior.

So just stop. You're never going to invalidate someone's opinion about a book or song or movie they love. You're just going to be a stupid bro in a shitty car that smells like blunts masked by the scent of seven sun faded air fresheners shaped like Yankee Candles.

'Overrated' is a word used by just about anybody to describe something or someone that is more highly regarded than they feel is warranted.

He's more renowned for his plot and stories than his actual writing.

A sure fire way to tell this is to look at how remakes through different mediums stack up to the book. The LOTR movies are far more acclaimed in the field of film than LOTR is in the field of Literature despite its street credibility for being influential to other Fantasy books.
