Post a more overrated writer.

>Protip: You can't.

>> No.6353058

Hardly overrated. Most people know LotR for the movies.
A friend of mine didn't even know The Hobbit was one book.

he is deffinatly overrated, he is still an amazing writer especially from a technical standpoint, but I know many people who have only ever read Tolkien and immortalize him as the one writer to rule them all despite having never read any real "high" lit. if I had to vote on a more overrated writer I would go with Tolkien 2.0

Overrated is a word used by inadequate people to make other people feel inferior.

>It is the equivalent of the guy who pulls up next to you at a traffic light in a souped up Honda Civic with a fart pipe burbling away that floors it when the light turns green before you even get a chance to take your foot off the brake. This hypothetical bro cares so much that he beat you; he smiles looking in the rear view mirror, but he only looks back when he's far enough away to not see the look of indifference on your face.

You'll notice that people use the word overrated to attack celebrated authors and books (or any other media) to feel superior. Nobody is busy making threads about how Danielle Steele is overrated. So just stop. You're never going to invalidate someone's opinion about a book or song or movie they love. You're just going to be a stupid bro in a shitty car that smells like blunts masked by the scent of seven sun faded air fresheners shaped like Yankee Candles.

>i care enough about this sort of thing to carefully compose a paragraph explaining how indifferent to it i am

'Overrated' is a word used by just about anybody to describe something or someone that is more highly regarded than they feel is warranted.

That's bullshit and you know it.

>I think I will start a thread about how Tolkien is overrated so other people will know exactly how I feel and possibly avoid wasting any time reading his overrated books. Then I will challenge others to find an author even more overrated (which I'm sure they won't be able to) thus creating a stupid thread of pointless arguments. Then I will lord over my creation, secure in the fact that Tolkien has been taken down a peg or two. God knows the smarmy bastard and his ilk deserve it.

No, that's the meaning of the word and how it's primarily used.

>Then I will challenge others to find an author even more overrated (which I'm sure they won't be able to)

Given that "You can't" serves as a response-prompting provocation rather than as a veridical declaration of certainty on the part of the speaker, I feel that the above disqualifies you from any authority to issue blanket statements about what various words and phrases mean.

E.L. James all the way up to Jonathan Franzen.

Tolkein's good, man. He's not John fucking Milton but c'mon, be real.

He's more renowned for his plot and stories than his actual writing.

A sure fire way to tell this is to look at how remakes through different mediums stack up to the book. The LOTR movies are far more acclaimed in the field of film than LOTR is in the field of Literature despite its street credibility for being influential to other Fantasy books.

>"Overrated" just means "he has lots of fans and I, personally, am not a fan."

It's ok if you don't like Tolkien or Lovecraft, but just because they're popular and you dislike them or what they wrote, it doesn't mean they have no right or merit to be popular. It seems like a stupid word to say to describe ANY writer. No one is "overrated." You just disagree and should probably just read something else instead.

>> No.6354941

>>6354935
>You just disagree

The word 'just' isn't doing any work there. To say that someone is overrated IS to express the very disagreement you're offering as an 'alternative' explanation.

Maybe this is what you do when you say something is overrated, but when I say something is overrated I mean that it gets far too much attention for its quality. In no way am I claiming superiority or that I've beaten them in any way.
Your post looks like something I'd read on facebook.
