Do you read as escapism?

Doesn't everybody? People always say of great writers that they can make you feel as if you're in the middle of the events of the book, that they can take you another place and time.

Not entirely although with my current life situation reading does fill some level of escapism for me. However literature disturbs or challenges me more than it comforts. Inb4 "literature is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable" even if that accurately describes what I've written here.

Sure there's always an element of escapism in fiction, but if an author is skilled at bringing characters to life, then there's also much to be learned from reading. For example, if someone is spiritually lost, they might try reading The Brothers Karamazov to see if it can help them answer their questions. Anyway, it's not JUST escapism.

Escapism doesn't mean 'you feel as if you're in the middle of the events of the book'.
>escapism
>oxford dictionary: the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment
>dictionary.com: the avoidance of reality by absorption of the mind in entertainment or in an imaginative situation, activity, etc.

I don't event read. lel
I watch a lot of movies and yeah they help me escape my reality. It isn't just escapism though. I enjoy it and I learn a lot from it, it's my hobby. Why does it have to be escapism? Life would be boring witouth books or movies.
