What's the difference between, say, "The Alchemist" and "Ulysses"? What makes one shit and the other a masterpiece in comparison to themselves and others? Want to hear your opinion /lit/.

They are not; all opinions are subjective and therefore the same.

The message of one is truer to the absolute reality than the other.

Implying the Alchemist is shit

Implying it isn't /lit/ herd mentatlity

Okay, but you can't say that about an argument. What happens if someone has a better argument about the quality of them? Couldn't you say that therefore it's way more logical to say one is 'better' than the other?

>>6329193
So, if a shitty movie has a message that can be aplied to daily life but a way better done movie (in technical levels) doesn't, then the first is technically better?

Could you explain why it isn't that bad then?

>> No.6329255

>>6329242
You first need to be able to explain why it isn't that good (without rubbish arguments like "new-age bullshit")

edit
because while I found it underwhelming I have yet to find any intelligent criticism here as to why it might be out-right shit.

Yes.

Basically, in my opinion, it sucks due to the prose being boring and so simple that, at its core, it's nothing. The plot is also worthless: there's no subtlety in it, no message to uncover. Sure, you could say it just tells you to chase your dreams or whatever, but that's just it: a shitty self-help book.

What's better: a three Michelin star steak, or a Big Mac?

Well, it depends on how you determine quality: price, time devoted, personal taste? If one of the two former, the answer is obvious. And if you're reside in the personal taste camp, then Alchemist or Big Mac, it is obvious why 'kind' of person you are.

What determines 'good' literature then? Btw, I do agree with you. I just want to know your reasoning.

It's just motivational clichés strung together. He goes looking for a treasure and it turns out the treasure is a life lesson.

Fuck that rabbit

"Good-writing" is an illusion that I do not wish to partake.
