Oh, usually when one of my topics of interests come up, like movies, or literature, or philosophy, or art, stuff like that. Usually they just dismiss the first few statements of mine offhand but as we get more into the topic the exhibit a "surprise" reaction and gradually recognize that they've underestimated me, and a good many end up seeing me as a superior. Of course really stupid people simply don't understand anything I say and continue to condescend to me, but they're pretty rare, and the types of thugs or arrogant pricks I don't spend much time with anyway. It's best to hide your power level around people who obviously aren't that far above average, in case you trip any inferiority complex.

e.g. One time I was with a group of people and I mentioned Foucault. One guy gave me a condescending look and said, "*You've* read Foucault?" And I said, "Some of his stuff, yeah, like Discipline and Punish." "Discipline and PunishMENT," another guy corrected me. I let that go, and just briefly outlined the implications Foucault's thought has for the institutions of science and academia (what we were talking about before was criticisms of science). When I was done, everyone just stared at me for a couple of seconds and the guy who'd "corrected" me hastily changed the subject. Afterward the guy who had doubted that I'd read Foucault came up to me and apologized if he'd come off as condescending, and said that he'd tried to read the guy and didn't understand a word because of his materialist scientist background, and that I'd done a very good job of summarizing the position and that he now understood it himself. After that the guy started actually listening to everything I said.
