Yeah, Nietzsche's predictive ability was uncanny. He specifically predicted world war 1, his own eventual world fame (at a time when he wasn't read by more than a few dozen people), that Germany would pose a threat that all other countries in Europe should deal with, that Europe would eventually go atheist, etc. And now advances in genetic engineering are slowly but surely ushering in the reign of the superman.

I think the ubermensch arises on several levels. 1 is within the individual, where the attainment of self mastery puts one 'above the man oneself', an idea later adapted by Adler in his psychotherapy. Then there is the 'literary ubermensch,' which is to say, literature which stands above the whole fact of man at a great distance. Finally however I don't think that the Nietzschean eschatology is complete without at least considering the possibility of a superhuman organism, whether it be a future transhuman genetically engineeredpeople or an all-knowing global artificial intelligence that watches over humanity.

It seems more likely to me that humanity will 'evolve' by building its successor, not by natural selection. We're dealing with a species that has too much power of intervention in nature to be simply selected against.
