DFW thread! Just kidding, we got enough of those already. So I got a whole bunch of Amazon gift cards recently, and I feel generous so I'm gonna share them with you. Post books you want from Amazon itt and if I like the book I'll buy it, strip the DRM and share it with you guys.

I'm open to all subjects, but keep your choices under $15. Post a book description, picture, why you want the book, anything to convince me to buy that book for you.

I'll be checking in regularly but I'll give you guys until tomorrow or the day after to post. If the thread dies and I haven't delivered, I'll make a new thread with the same pic.

The Crying Lot of 49.

Do you want me to paste a description from somewhere like a pleb? I haven't read the book, therefore cannot describe it.

Read Mason & Dixon recently and really enjoyed it, Pynchon's prose is beautiful and everything about the storytelling in that book, the tact with which he handles central themes and character interactions are just spectacular.

Exiled From Almost Everywhere is perhaps the best work of Goytisolo's later period. The author, who in his 20s, wrote realistic novels that described the vulgar horrors of Franco's Spain, from which he was exiled, later began to develop a freer, less traditional, more ironic and humorous voice. Nowhere is this style more accomplished than in this novel, beautifully translated into English by Peter Bush . . . Under the appearance of a wicked romp, Exiled From Almost Everywhere is a profound work that demands close attention from its readers – who, as the author confesses at the end, must remain bewildered by its Wonderland invention. Something has taken place, something has been described that escapes the frame of the story, in which, magically, reader, writer and murky protagonist coalesce.

>Johann Joachim Quantz's On Playing the Flute has long been recognized as one of the primary sources of information about eighteenth-century performance practice. In spite of its title, it is not simply a tutor for the flute, but a fully-fledged programme for training musicians of all types, with detailed information on intonation, ornamentation, dynamics, the 'duties' of the various accompanying performers, including the leader of the orchestra, and the principal forms and styles (French, Italian and German) of the time. Although Quantz is most often identified as the teacher of Frederick the Great, his musical roots were in Dresden, the most brilliant musical establishment in Germany; and his travels and studies in Italy, France and England gave him direct experience of most phases of European musical life in the 1720s and 30s.

We all know how important the Greeks are. They ushered us into the bright era of civilization that we take granted today - far away from the dark animal days of mankind. What more great would it do to learn about the achievements and great spirit of these admired people? If you love the Greeks, then reading this book is certainly a no-brainer.

Again, it's beyond me how this book by the same author could be missing in the net when Mythology is a best seller.

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some unpleasant criminals, a friendly hot-dog stand operator, and an elephant (not to mention a death by elephant).

Thanks OP

Do you know that eating three times a day is a modern concept? The greeks only two meals a day, yet they were very strong and fit athletes. This also explains why there is a rise in obesity in our postmodern era. The same thing applies to our sleep. We used to sleep twice a day back then, especially during the winter. We never really had electricity before. We had to deal with the rules of nature. You had to rise up early to maximize the day and your productivity. Backtracking to our past is something that I really want to explore. If other anons have a recommendation please by all means. I would appreciate it a lot. Coin Locker Babies - Ryu Murakami

http://www.amazon.com/Coin-Locker-Babies-Ryu-Murakami-ebook/dp/B00BQAVA34

Two babies are left in a Tokyo station coin locker and survive against the odds, but their lives are forever tainted by this inauspicious start. As they grow up, they join the ranks of Toxitown: a district of addicts, freaks and prostitutes. One becomes a bisexual rock star and looks for his mother, while the other one, an athlete, seeks revenge. This savage and stunning story unfolds in a surrealistic whirl of violence.

>BOOK DESCRIPTION
Traumatized by memories of his war-ravaged country, and with his son and daughter-in-law dead, Monsieur Linh travels to a foreign land to bring the child in his arms to safety. The other refugees in the detention centre are unsure how to help the old man; his caseworkers are compassionate, but overworked. Monsieur Linh struggles beneath the weight of his sorrow, and becomes increasingly bewildered and isolated in this strange, fast-moving town. And then he encounters Monsieur Bark. Neither speaks the other's language, but Monsieur Bark is sympathetic to the foreigner's need to care for the child. Recently widowed and equally alone, he is eager to talk, and Monsieur Linh knows how to listen. The two men share their solitude, and find friendship in an unlikely dialogue between two very different cultures. Delicate and restrained, but with an extraordinary twist, Monsieur Linh and His Child is another limpid, immensely moving novel of perfect simplicity, by the author of Brodeck's Report.

I started reading this and quickly dropped it. Two french intelectuals stroking each other's ego, pretending to be academia's bad boys.

"Oh Bernard-Henri, you're such a misanthropist, that is why the public hates you."
"Ah yes, Michel, and the world cannot handle the ugly truths we spit in their faces. They are not ready for them, but we must not give up. It is our burden to be ahead of our time, which is why, my friend, we have become public enemies."

But whatever, here you go, check it out yourself:

mmm I honestly don't know since I don't use any i-products, but I would say you're still safe. Basically, once a book is DRM-free, there's no way to tell where it came from, so they can't accuse you of piracy. You could have sat down on your computer, typed up a copy of your paper book onto word and then turned it into an epub, for all they know. And that is perfectly legal, so you're safe. But maybe just google it, "DRM-free books + iBooks"?

Right, ok. Did some quick research. Everything I've uploaded here is DRM-free, which means you don't need to worry about being tracked down by anybody, be it Amazon or Apple. You can use these books on any e-reader/software you like and you'll be fine.

The only difference between Amazon and iBooks is that the books you buy from the latter use a different type of DRM, which needs to be removed through a different method than the one I use. But I haven't bought anything from iBooks, so I don't have to worry about that DRM, and neither should you.

"This may be the high point of American sports journalism." --Robert Lipsyte, The New York Times

"McPhee has produced what is probably the best tennis book ever written. On the surface it is a joint profile of . . . Arthur Ashe and Clark Graebner, but underneath it is considerably more--namely, a highly original way of looking at human behavoir . . . He proves his point with consummate skill and journalistic artistry. You are the way you play, he is saying. The court is life." --Donald Jackson, Life

"John McPhee's Levels of the Game . . . alternates between action on the court and interwoven profiles of the contestants. It is a remarkable performance--written with style, verve, insight and wit." --James W. Singer, Chicago Sun-Times

This account of a tennis match played by Arthur Ashe against Clark Graebner at Forest Hills in 1968 begins with the ball rising into the air for the initial serve and ends with the final point. McPhee provides a brilliant, stroke-by-stroke description while examining the backgrounds and attitudes which have molded the players' games.

The post-nuclear action-adventure classic that defined a genre.

A biologically engineered supervirus that turns humans into blood-thirsty geeks called Contams. Pitted against them, and the Dark Messiah who created them, is Phoenix, the only known Immune on the planet.

This complete Phoenix series: books one through five from Dark Messiah to Reap the Whirlwind.

>Here's another of those action novels I bought as a kid but never read. Actually, I did try to read it, but as I recall I found it boring at the time, and only made it through the first few chapters. That I found this book "boring" now makes me laugh, as Dark Messiah is the most ultra-violent, graphic, lurid, nutzoid novel I've ever read. Yes, it's even more extreme than any of the previous novels I've reviewed on this blog. I loved it and place it in the highest echelon of men's adventure trash. It goes over the top in many and spectacular ways, over and over again.
>This was the start of a five-volume series, and it's funny that the cover presents the book as just another action novel, when in reality this is the kind of book your parents would ban you from reading if they knew what lurked inside. You name it, it happens in Dark Messiah. It's like David Alexander made a checklist of what was hot in the current action-novel marketplace, and ensured to include all of it in his novel. Gun-porn? Graphic violence? Purple-prose sex? Horrific acts of mutant rape and defilement? It's all here, and it's all taken to the 10th degree. (And speaking of that cover, don't you love how the artist so blatantly based the character on Bruce Willis -- only with blond hair?)

I studied in China for about half a year and the young people I met there really inspired me. I mostly met people at music events so my view of Chinese youth culture is kinda dreamy and not as developed as I would like it to be. This book looks like it might have some more insights to the materialistic strains of popular thinking in China among young people.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0230120628/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1427006672&sr=8-1&keywords=china+youth&dpPl=1&dpID=51gTgLkvf%2BL&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

Alternatively, since that book is a bit expensive, I've also had my eye on what essentially amounts to "China for Dummies." Dr. Wasserstrom recently gave a talk at my university and plugged this book. He's working on a monograph about the boxer rebellion now.

(the whole series is very good, for those who like the subject)
I would like a dictionary, in french, of buddhic terms since my understanding is less good in english while I wish to be careful not to misinterpret the meanings of the suttras.

there are two main dictionaries, but none are available on LG ; if you can find them....

hey guys, I got a method to get free audiobooks from https://www.audible.com/(it still works):
before doing anything, you will google "disposable OR temporary email" and open some of those websites. they will give you an email address (sometimes you can change it) that will last for a few minutes or some hours. you will then copy said email address.
then, you will:
- go to https://www.audible.com
- click on "get my free audiobook"
- enter email in the "My e-mail address is:" box
- click on "No, I am a new Amazon customer."
- click on continue
- enter random name
- paste the email again
- enter a new password, twice
- click on continue

you now have access to 1 free audiobook.
if you want to repeat this, I'd recommend using SOCKS proxies or changing your IP somehow (web proxies are shit, and other proxies may leak your real IP address... I have no idea if they filter already used addresses, though) and CLEANING THE COOKIES in your browser (or using a different profile/browser).

I hope this help.

can you strip drm from rented files? also, this is above $15, it's $16.64, but i've been interested in the /jp/ and hikikomori ways for a long time.

www.amazon.com/Sociology-Japanese-Youth-Returnees-Institute-ebook/dp/B008FYY7T8

Over the past thirty years, whilst Japan has produced a diverse set of youth cultures which have had a major impact on popular culture across the globe, it has also developed a succession of youth problems which have led to major concerns within the country itself. Drawing on detailed empirical fieldwork, the authors of this volume set these issues in a clearly articulated ‘social constructionist’ framework, and put forth a sociology of Japanese youth problems which argues that there is a certain predictability about the way in which these problems are discovered, defined and dealt with.

i've downloaded most of your pomf links, so even if you don't do this for me, thanks for all the others, i've gotten at least 6 interesting books from this thread.

If you're still here OP, I know this book is 34 cents over your price target, but its subject is incredibly interesting.

http://www.amazon.com/Patrician-Tribune-Publius-Clodius-Pulcher-ebook/dp/B00JYDMZUC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427314984&sr=8-2&keywords=W.+Jeffrey+Tatum

Clodius Pulcher was the ultimate political troll. He tried to sleep with Caesar's wife, yet Caesar kept supporting him, then got himself adopted by a younger man, leaving the patrician class to become a pleb. As tribune of the plebs, he successfully pushed a very progressive agenda until his assassination by an optimates death squad. As far as I know, it's the only book about this very subject and it's unavailable elsewhere than amazon (I've looked). Thank you in advance for considering it.

Hey OP, here are my choices, Id appreciate any of these, /lit/ hasnt read much yugoslav literature either, and its great. I havent read those books either. thanks.
http://www.amazon.com/Boris-Davidovich-Eastern-European-Literature/dp/1564782735/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1427322388&sr=1-1&keywords=danilo+kis

Composed of seven dark tales, A Tomb for Boris Davidovich presents variations on the theme of political and social self-destruction throughout Eastern Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. The characters in these stories are caught in a world of political hypocrisy, which ultimately leads to death, their common fate. Although the stories Kis tells are based on historical events, the beauty and precision of his prose elevates these ostensibly true stories into works of literary art that transcend the politics of their time.

http://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Dead-European-Classics-Danilo/dp/081011514X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1427322388&sr=1-3&keywords=danilo+kis

In these stories Kis depicts human relationships, encounters, landscapes- the multitude of details that make up a human life

Set in the town of Travnik, Bosnian Chronicle presents the struggle for supremacy in a region that stubbornly refuses to submit to any outsider. The era is Napoleonic and the novel, both in its historical scope and psychological subtlety, Tolstoyan. In its portrayal of conflict and fierce ethnic loyalties, the story is also eerily relevant.

OP here, gonna share what I'm reading right now:

>Crimea: The Great Crimean War, 1854-1856, by Trevor Royle

>The Crimean War is one of history's most compelling subjects. It encompassed human suffering, woeful leadership and maladministration on a grand scale. It created a heroic myth out of the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade and, in Florence Nightingale, it produced one of history's great heroes. New weapons were introduced; trench combat became a fact of daily warfare outside Sebastopol; medical innovation saved countless soldiers' lives that would otherwise have been lost. The war paved the way for the greater conflagration which broke out in 1914 and greatly prefigured the current situation in Eastern Europe.

Crimea - Trevor Royle.epub
>a.pomf.se/hgamdl.epub

It's an interesting read so far, not only because of current world events, but also because, as the author will try to argue, this war set up many of the pieces that were crucial to the development of WWI. Russia, England and France battling it out over Turkey and the Middle East. Check it out!

working on the 1st one.

Favorite all-time are Proust (read his stuff twice, gearing up to read it in french as well) and Faulkner. After that there's lots of stuff, among them Thomas Bernhard and Hermann Broch. Sharing some Broch because he doesn't get enough attention here on /lit/.

>The Death of Virgil

>It is the reign of the Emperor Augustus, and Publius Vergilius Maro, the poet of the Aeneid and Caesar's enchanter, has been summoned to the palace, where he will shortly die. Out of the last hours of Virgil's life and the final stirrings of his consciousness, the Austrian writer Hermann Broch fashioned one of the great works of twentieth-century modernism, a book that embraces an entire world and renders it with an immediacy that is at once sensual and profound. Begun while Broch was imprisoned in a German concentration camp, The Death of Virgil is part historical novel and part prose poem -- and always an intensely musical and immensely evocative meditation on the relation between life and death, the ancient and the modern.
