My childhood book was The Dream Tower. Now, nobody here will know of it.
It was written in Chorley by David Sands. It was set in Rivington Pike. If you know Rivington Pike, you'll know there is a Victorian folly there.
Well, the story goes: there is a man called the Wizzark who lives in the folly and tends to the plants. You see, every continent is in the folly, split by an electromagnetic forcefield which only he can pass through.
Children keep dreaming of the folly, sometimes brothers and sisters appear together in dream and they both recollect it. All of the children find their way in and the Wizzark shows them round and shows them the destruction of the rainforest but also the beauty of it.
I wish it wasn't just a locally-published treat so everyone could share my memories of it, but then again the rarity also makes it more special.

Please tell me I'm not the only one to have read this book. I know you Americans have no history (coolface) but I used to spend hours upon hours looking for all of the tiny details in the illustrations. It really did bring history alive for me, and probably inspired the love for primitvism and simple-living I have today (yeah, I say that sat in front of a computer, lol).
