When they're at the back of the book they're called endnotes.

That's fine, but is cringey when the footnotes are there too

That's literally impossible, silly. When they're at the end they are endnotes, not footnotes.

That said, I hate it too.

Endnotes are the proof that the writers and editors do not read what they sell and never ever put themselves in the situation of the reader as they remain to egotistic.

>> No.6239429

that's the worst thing about oxford world classics. i wish they were on the bottom of the freakin' page! they are in the introductions.

>> No.6239488

Imagine a far-future world where DFW and Terry Pratchett works are treated as classics and have all the footnotes moved to the end and annotated with further translation and cultural notes.

>> No.6239500

who cares? I don't even read the footnotes anyway. They're never insightful or add anything to you. You always just read them and think "Ok.....so fucking what?"

>> No.6239605

What about when there are no indications to check for endnotes (fuck you Fagles)

Wrong. In fiction they're part of the narrative so of course they're important. They're also used really well by a number of non-fiction writers to insert interesting points without destroying their flow.
Scullard's Carrhae footnote in From the Gracchi to Nero is a brilliant piece of work and one of my top ten footnotes of all time.
