pratchett seconded. xanth series if you're into that thing. hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy and sequels. myth series by aspirin are supposed to be funny, haven't read them much. princess bride was funny at some parts.

pratchett's the best for comedy though.

Venus on the Half-Shell

Kind of like Hitchhiker's Guide and Gulliver's Travels.
Found myself laughing pretty much from page one.

anyone have suggestions for a comedy that's a bit more contemporary?

i've already read the hichhikers galaxy and quite a bit of the discworld series, and i'm looking for something thats not as much fantasy.

Max Goldt is hilarious. If you know German, or if there's even a translation out there.

Def Catch-22

The Exploding Detective by John Swartzwelder, who wrote a whole bunch of simpsons episodes when it was still good, is the funniest thing i have ever read. i was literally in pain a good 5 or 6 times reading it.

Christopher Moore. Look him up, he's brilliant at just really fast, funny dialogue.

not OP, but thanks his books look good

to OP, the only funny books I've read (which I can recall) are catch-22 and a confederacy of dunces. both amazing, but I liked a confederacy of dunces better,

The Divine Comedy, it's a comedy of divine proportions.
