You know why there are cheap books now?

Because publishers weren't making enough money selling good quality books to wealthy people, so they decided to rip off the non wealthy people by mass manufacturing books that cost 2 cents to make and selling them for a gigantic markup

I'm not going to write out a piece of literary criticism for each on a Chinese may may board

Morrison focuses too much on race and she has the typical womanly over-reliance on colour/food/smell in her descriptions rather than actual themes or interesting philosophical discussion/aesthetic standards. granted I have only read beloved and the bluest eye

kundera is too sterile. the man does this, the woman does this, there is little emotion. I'd liken him to the difference between someone like Mozart and Salieri, resembling the latter; often technically good and seemingly creating what one would assume is a good novel, yet often it is lifeless, empty and shallow

I've only read ashbery's poetry but I find it meandering and vague, I generally dislike free verse as I see no reason for it to be poetry rather than experimental prose fiction, and ashbery gets on my nerves for his focus on his personal nostalgia and things that would only ever appeal to people in situations like his (ennui of middle class (north eastern?) US family of academics). he uses large, esoteric words unnecessarily and it hinders his work rather than improves it in my opinion, unlike say DFW or an arguably more successful poet trying to achieve similar goals: Aesop Rock.

Coetzee disinterests me for much of the same reasons as Morrison and ashbery: too focused on personal themes, not universal enough. whereas Tolstoy makes the plight of singular Russian families a humanitarian issue, Coetzee seems to make the plight of the entire black people under apartheid an issue of rich white post-colonial dutch afrikaaners, and although this isn't an aesthetic criticism per se I'm generally not fond of overtly political works which allow their quality to slip in the quest for 'a message'

I'm beginning to see a link between my dislike for these authors now that I consider oe's focus on Japanese politics, the Japanese search for identity and largely Japanese issues. I love rushdie and I suppose I should like oe's grandiose descriptions which often create humourous and touching bathos combining the mundane and the grandiloquent, yet something about his style irks me. perhaps it's due to reading Japanese in translation to English, which I've found always creates an unnecessary air of mysticism. maybe I'm too harsh on him considering how different our two languages are. nonetheless, I find him often bordering on the overblown and pretentious, though as I said this could be a problem of mine as a reader rather than his as a writer

Sadly (and perhaps embarrassingly), it was an impulse buy that I never got round to reading.

I imagine if you really like PKD you might enjoy it. If nothing else, it looks really good on the shelf and it's fun to flip through. Hella expensive though.

For some reason I don't have a real bookshelf so books just kind of pile up. Can always find cool and sometimes pretty weird stuff at my used bookstore for pretty cheap. The book about shopping carts is extremely strange.
