this thread is made of win. I've read a shit ton of his books. I still have to read Hells' Angels, though. But I've read The Run Diary, The Great Shark Hunt, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hey Rube, Kingdom of Fear, the second volume of letters, and a few biographies including the Gonzo book.

The Rum Diary gave me so much insight in how an american would have thought on being in Puerto Rico in the 1950's. I use to go to La Perla, in Old San Juan, smoke a blunt, and read this book. Its pretty fuckin cool.
Did he have a home in Vieques? Does anyone know?

nah, I don't think so. I've always had the impression he never had enough money to get anything beyond his ranch at Woody Creek. Plus, there's all the drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, guns, and shit to blow up that he would always buy.

In his letters and some of his writings he bitches about not getting as much money as he thought he deserved for his literary contributions. He may have conveniently been overlooking the cost upon his publishers from the damages he would cause on his little adventures, of course.

I also gave a copy of the Rum Diary to my ex just before she left to NY. We had just broken up and I couldn't even stand lookin at her, the cheating bitch. She was completely illeterate but seein my books asked me for something good for her 2 read on the plane. If she read it she would have understood the message.
