Alright /lit/, I have just finished pic related after a recommendation here and I loved it. I want to read more like this. Is the sequel worth it? Or should I read Tales of Adam or The Story of B next?

you're in luck op you have plebian as fuck tastes that masquerade as highball to other 15 year olds so the world basically revolves around you. I recommend the internet hugbox Reddit and the films of christopher nolan

read like hunger games or something. If you like ishmael you will probably like THG or GoT lol

Don't have to back it up. The book itself is the obvious reason why it's terrible.

i havent shit talked ishmael ever in any thread but i disliked the book. the socratic device is bad enough. i dislike rand for making fiction a vehicle for her ideology, this is even a step down from that. most in his position would write a non-fiction book, but the author inserts himself as a gorilla for the reader.

as if this wasn't bad enough, the leaver/taker typology has an embedded morality, its black and white as far as its presented. the only thing remotely interesting was the reinterpretation of the old testament, but that reading probably elicits eye rolls and shrugs from biblical scholars

I don't know why you people insist on vomiting these "insights" so regularly. You're basically just admitting you don't know how to browse through 4chan, or don't like it here. Either way.

Why is it bad?

I thought a state of barely-suppressed loathing was the standard frame of mind for browsing 4chan.

I read Ishmael as a teenager and it came off as being preachy. It was hard for me to suspend disbelief and thus it became obvious that the author was projecting his hippy environmentalist views through Ishmael like a ventriloquist.

Perhaps Quinn just feels that style of writing comes most naturally to him. I don't see how it detracts from the point of the book or how it's "forced".

>> No.6177036

>>6176317

It is preachy, unashamedly so.

>projecting his hippy environmentalist views through Ishmael like a ventriloquist.

That is exactly what he's doing. That is not an argument for why it's bad though.

> I don't see how it detracts from the point

It detracts extremely - the human narrator just exists to agree with the ape, there is no interaction, no exchange of ideas. In fact, the narrator just praises the monkey's idea, which is clearly the author trying to influence you - if the guy likes it, why don't you like it?

and then that overlong detour when the car breaks down, what possible point did that serve?

>> No.6177129

>>6177083

But if it was a non-fiction book there would be a similar lack of exchange of ideas. And that's basically what Ishmael is, a non-fiction book in the form of dialogue.
