calvino was far more meta than kubrik ever was. he never directed a film about a director making a film, at least in those terms explicitly. such a movie equivalent to 'if on a winters night a traveler' would involve scenes where we see the film being developed, a scene of the editing process as which has observable effects on the plot, etc.

i think calvino's images are ethereal, where kubrik's attention is often historical (like the 'history of mankind' in 2001). calvino looks into existential questions obliquely, with fantastic/surreal images, where kubrik is often direct/literal. clockwork orange is a deep study of the single character of alex. calvino by contrast summons many characters doing silly, weird, surreal things, not rape and beatings

bit of an unfair comparisons also, since kubrik adapted books, didn't write them.
