How to read in a loud environment?

People make noise everywhere here... even in the library but not just.

What do you guise do when youre in a noisy place? I use plugs but that aint enough anymore...

I read and commute, and I actually listen to a lot of music while I read.

Anything without strong lyrics or mood changes does the job. Usually records I'm familiar with as well, so as not to divert concentration. Stuff like Byetone, William Basinski, Richard Chartier and Loscil works for me.

Some books suffer in anything more than silence if you really need to sink into them and can't afford to get pulled out of the rhythm for even a second but most things are fine.

I live with loud people and use ear plugs to sleep.
I'm a nurse so I've picked up a few tricks, not all of which are necessarily healthy.
On the really bad nights I'll grab my ear and pull it up and toward the back of my head whe inserting the ear plug. I squish the plugs first as well.
The point is to get them really deep in there. You'll know when you hit the spot because it'll eliminate sound almost completely instead of the usual dulling.
Again, this isn't actually good for your ears but if you don't lose the plugs in there and you don't do it every day you'll probably be fine.

When the weather's nice, which is 2 weeks a year in this shithole, I like to ride my bike into the woods with a sack lunch and read there.

Seneca wrote a letter on this very subject. He said that if continuous noises interrupt your concentration, it's a sign of a mind in turmoil. He advised mental hygiene.

Even Seneca said he had trouble with the noise sometimes. It's just a matter of mitigating it. It sounds to me though like an issue with anger towards the people and not necessarily the noise itself. It's not that hating niggers is bad, it's that hating people contributes to a tumultuous mind. You should try to focus on letting go and viewing your fellows with compassion and understanding. When you do that, you'll find that they bother you less, and their noise as well.

you might not be able to do this in public without looking like a retard, but those heavy duty ear muffs (the ones construction workers use), together with ear plugs, should do the trick. Go to your local hardware store and pick out a good set.

i see what youre saying and yes, i totally agree in that understanding instead of hate cleanses the mind but wouldt that "focus and let go" process slowly and unconsciously turn you into someone like them? like, youll be fine with something unnatural such as noise all the time and youll be losing all that silence gives without even noticing...
