I am frequently put off by the constant depictions of romance and/or sex in the stories I read. What titles do you recommend that are totally void of anything to do with romantic love, and sex. Preferably the story would not involve women in any capacity - I don't have a problem with women, but I have a complete lack of interest in them and I am having a very hard time finding books that don't broach that subject.

I don't drink, but I still will read novels in which the characters do, because otherwise I'd be massively limited my literary experience.

Thanks, I'll read it. Moby Dick was good in this regard too. I suppose it makes sense that stories about sea-faring voyages would have no women.

i think op's aversion is a little more understandable considering the total saturation of ideas of romance or sex in pretty much all areas of literature, and the importance with which they are depicted

I am not saying I won't or don't read books that have romance. If I did I'd have very little to read at all. I am just looking for stories that don't have those things so I can have a bit of a break now and then.

I realize that, certainly no genre has been based off drinking.
But just because something contains slight romantic elements or mentions of sex doesn't mean it's to be avoided. Plenty of great novels would be missed out that way.

That being said, OP, avoid Hemingway like the plague, the one exception being Old Man and The Sea.

Quite a few classic SF novels are sexless and romanceless. Arthur C. Clarke was at his best when avoiding the subject, e.g. Rendezvous with Rama.

Well, it's when you write about people making fugg, but do it in a weird detatched manner that paints it as vulgar, banal and ultimately unsatisfying.

Can't think of any titles off the top of my head, partly because I'm near the end of a two day period sans sleep, but sex isn't universally depicted positively in literature.

To be honest, even as a heterosexual man with a healthy libido I find it more interesting to read a satire or a critique of sex than a straight up sex scene.

Most everything has some kind of romance in it no matter if it adds to the story or not. If you want to avoid that you may want to look into stories with older protagonists or younger ones. In between is just asking for trouble.

Stuff like The Old Man and the Sea or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
