Do you take Burroughs' advice and keep a notebook next to your bed?

>> No.6118802

Of course.

>> No.6118806

I didn't know he advised that but I've done it for years anyway.

>> No.6118808

i do actually

>> No.6118834

No, but I keep my phone next to my bed. That way I can take both notes and voice memos.

Far superior to that dead tree shit.

Both Burroughs and Gore Vidal would write when they found themselves close to dreamstate.

I have an iPad next to my bed instead.

Or perhaps the act of recording your thoughts allows you to more fully grasp them, which forces you to reevaluate the actual quality of your thought.

For if your statement were universally true, then there would never have been a single good book written that wasn't dictated.

more like force them into a formal structure

dictating interrupts thoughts as well

The mere act of formalising what you're writing, trying to grasp hold of thoughts that come and go like smoke, necessarily interrupts their natural flow. Obviously, sober, clear thinking is important at some point, but generally you want to get the inspiration behind the thought out whole before strangling it with self consciousness

Thing is though, only a "formalized" idea can be communicated intelligibly.

Written quite a lot of ideas when was high.
Glad that did it, as most of them are really original.

>> No.6119878

for a dream diary? i kept one under my pillow but i'd never actually use it: it's too dark and i'm too lazy to turn on the lights. thought of keeping my voice recorder but i wouldn't transcribe it.
dreams are pretty boring when written down. only interesting when you're actually living them.
