S'up.

E.J.Pratt's reading room is where it's at, so long as it's not exam-season.
Small enough that people can't get away with the noise-making they do elsewhere (heaven help you if you try and study at Gerstein...), comfy chairs on the second floor, nice high ceiling, and you can prostrate yourself before the Northrop Frye/T.E. Lawrence shrine, if you so choose.

Someone else's blurry pic related.

Yes and no. It's gotten much better in the last 5ish years or so. Younger people are moving to the hip areas and new businesses and restaurants are opening all the time. Suburbanites are more willing to do things and spend their money in the city. Many core neighborhoods are much much better. Downtown is almost unrecognizable compared to 10 years ago because of how much has changed (for the good).

However, the city is really really big, and there are miles upon miles of neighborhoods that are just as bad as you can imagine. Areas are gentrifying for the incoming white hipsters, but not as much is being done for the neighborhoods, which is where most of the city's population lives. I must note that there are many stable black neighborhoods though. The schools are completely awful, which is a big deal for the city's future.

So it's a mixed bag. The city is objectively improving, but the change is focused on the whiter, gentrifying, hipster areas and downtown. People are hoping that a trickle down effect will radiate out to the neighborhoods.

I've started to enjoy Brutalism precisely because how many libraries seems to have been based of it.

It's seems to me that brutalism was connected with a deep desire to make literature, any by extension a truth, within the reach of the masses. However much we can criticize the truth that was spread (be it capitalism, fascism or Stalinism) we can't take the desire to educate away from it.

Brutalism has thus to me become synonymous with a desire to cause action within the populace, to make them realize themselves.

Holy shit someone actually posted the library I go to. Did not expect that. Here's another pic.

It's actually... weirdly good? Like, the good thing about it is that it's kind of unpredictable - there's all kinds of dusty shit lying around, presumably because it's underfunded, so you'll randomly run into something awesome and weird from the 70s and then not be able to find something relatively commonplace. I dunno, I kind of like it.

all of these nice pics make me miss my old university library, even if it was a brutalist mess of a design that made it hard to get too comfy. they used to give me free maps they were going to throw out. they'd order any book i asked them to get. qt librarian girls. browsing the marxism stacks. flipping through old german editions of goethe i could barely understand.

you really only start to miss something when you don't have it and i sure miss that place. now im stuck in a shit town where my own personal library is more impressive than the public one

i once tried looking for a marquis de sade book at the library, and they didn't have any sade at my library, nor the one in the next county over, nor the one in the bigger city next to my town, nor in the local community college.

Can I get a hint where to start? Name of a building?

You'd best believe I'm serious.

Enforcement of pic related would solve a lot of shelving problems at Robarts.

Came here to post Robarts but it was already there. Here's my local branch of the TPL then. It's pretty terrible. Homeless central + barely anywhere to sit or plug a laptop.

Kaisa is actally very pleasant due its abundance of natural light.

Only distributive aspect is the abundance of architecture tourists as it is one of the two notable architectural landmarks in Helsinki finished in the last five years.

No thank you. My old public was amazing, every corner or dead end had a lamp, coffee table, and a few of those massive leather chairs. I remember I used to skip class and grab the Complete Sherlock Holmes, then doze off for an hour or too. Comfy as fuck.

I love that people chose such interesting architecture for all these libraries. Rather than post the rinky dink suburban library near where I live I'll post muh uni library. It's pretty good, it usually has the book I want even if it is out of print or rare. It's hard to find a pic that illustrates it but much of the library is underground, there is a large plaza in front of the glass structure that is actually the roof of below ground floors.

Just around the corner from me. Somewhat decent selection inside, full of crackheads half the time, but it was used as the exterior for the police station in the original '84 Nightmare on Elm St, which is pretty neat.
