The Lord of the Rings books are piles of shit. The Hobbit was better than the movies, I'll put that out there, but the LOTR books ramble on for years about basically a whole lot of irrelevant content.

Tolkien created a great world (I'm a fan of the LOTR world myself) but his storytelling in those books was abysmal.
