Rand didn't set out to write a novel, she just wanted to write a book on philosophy that the average person would both read and understand. That's why her characters are so one-dimensional and her dialogues so wonky. It's not about writing a good novel with good characters, it's about tricking people into reading and thinking about philosophy.
When people try to judge it as a novel, it's the same as saying "The Godfather was not a good comedy." True, but that's not the point.

Rand's work is not, at its center, political, nor is it radical in any way. It's literally the Golden Rule consistently applied to all people.
Don't like people using force against you? Don't initiate force against them.
The reason people get all buttmad is that these principles pretty much damn most government and government action, and most people were educated in gov. schools, or according to gov. standards.

Rand makes a great distraction for those without rigorous reading habits in the first place.

Atlas Shrugged is a 1000-page novel that should have been a 300-page novel that should have been a 60-page essay that should have been thrown in the trash

Nice opinion, but there are adults here and they're talking about facts.

Putting the cart before the horse so hard there bro.

"We are X because we have institutions based off of human nature that believe in X"

I'm finishing The Fountainhead.
It's like a bad written Atlas Shrugged, and I actually enjoyed Atlas Shrugged, but so many similarities among characters and plot that takes a lot pour out the book.

Substitute "Catholic Church" or "Caste System" for Government and you'll see what I'm talking about, just to clarify.
Whether right or wrong, ideas that threaten the status quo are generally opposed, regardless of the legitimacy of the institutions that oppose them.
Galileo and gravity, etc.
But perhaps we're straying too far, this discussion should be about the work only, since any discussion about whether Rand was actually right or wrong would probably be an exercise in futility.

I fully agree with this. Even Ted Kaczynski could make a short essay with his thoughts, Atlas Shrugged is too long winded for the few points it tries to make.

Anyone who reads and enjoys Rand should get their reproductive organs removed.
