My guess is that your apathy stems from some kind of thought, and the way that Zen works (in my layman understanding) is that it deactivates this verbal loop process of thinking and makes you see that 'truly' is.

That is, I have a cup of coffee here in front of me and it is only a cup of coffee and I like it because of that. Not because it is a object of funtionality which leads to the utility of bodily functions and emancipation of the working people from the tyranny of tiredness. I hope you get this simile.

This is a legit answer. I have experienced bouts of depression and anxiety and apathy since my teens; the only thing besides "doing well in my life, career, and relationships" that snaps me out of it is practicing boxing, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu.

You're literally given no room to think about being apathetic, because the alternative is getting punched in the face.
