Can someone convince me to take Sam Harris seriously?

>> No.6088874

I suppose we could put him in a morning grey stroller with a Hombourg hat and make him watch Robert Redford for posture, but I'm not sure if he would essentially still be Sam Harris without the fedora.

Someone gave me a copy of Free Will, which was a decent use of an afternoon, but my qt 3.14 gf saw my copy and keeps buying me all of his books and I'm too anxious and polite to tell her to stop and now I have every Sam Harris book.

You're lucky to have such a nice girlfriend. That's a thoughtful gesture, even if they are Sam Harris books (which, I should add, are often criticized unfairly).

He's not a fucking neuroscientist. He's a COGNITIVE neuroscientist, they're really fucking different. The former is actual science, the latter is a branch of psychology.

>> No.6093570

no, hes a fucking retard trying to cash in on the Dawkin market.

I can't think of a single one of his books that produces anything new or original. Its a very paternal explanation of why you should stop being a naughty un-scientific boy.

amazing atheist tier

>> No.6093593

I have only read one of Sam's books and watched some of his debates, but he seems to make some sense. Maybe his ideas aren't awfully original, but he does make some valid criticisms. The only thing I don't like about the New Atheists is their focus more on the alleged barbarity of religion rather than the evidence for it.

Movement atheists aren't serious people at all. To identify as atheist is really a pretty superficial thing.

I don't think people would hate him if he weren't so popular and if we didn't have a thread about him every other day.

I read a few pages of The Moral Landscape and I new instantly that he was a hack. He says that we can figure out morality using nothing but science. But then he says that Right and Good are whatever improves wellbeing without appealing to science to justify that claim. He just says, "Well *of course* improving wellbeing is the moral thing to do. You can't reasonably doubt that."
