Hey faggots. Hijacking this worthless thread to ask: what is the best translation of Brothers Karamazov? The only translation available at Barnes & Nobles was Constance Garnett and I know enough about her to know she is worth avoiding. Are there other translations? Who is the best?

I've heard that the red edition OP posted is the best translation, but honestly I read the penguin edition by a different translator and that was fine too. I feel like except for a few select segments in the book, most of it can be objectively translated to maintain Dostoevsky's writing style.

I read the P&V translation and found it awkwardly written at times (although not enough to spoil my overall impression of the book). Then I read Ignat Avsey's translation of The Idiot and found it much more pleasingly written. His version of The Brother Karamazov is titled The Karamazov Brothers, which I find slightly off-putting, but if I was to read it again I'd go for that one.

i liked it, some of it was beautiful and i really liked all the religious stuff and the relationships of the characters, i found a lot of it very melodramatic though

i got to like the last 30 pages and just put it down for some reason, and ive heard the closing argument for the defense is like the best bit of the book, oh well

also the grand inquisitor section wasnt that interesting

Expect no ending. This was supposed to be a trilogy but Dosto died too soon, so lots of characters don't get anywhere.

Dmitri is the only crybaby. Ivan and Alyosha are god tier and Fyodor is top kek tier.

>> No.6066203

Isn't it funny how both this and Dead Souls were intended to be the first part of a trilogy before the author died? Not only that, but Gogol apparently intended to somehow redeem the morally corrupt Chichikov with the two other parts, whereas Dostoevsky intended to make Alyosha go through a life of great sin, thus fulfilling the original title, "The Life of a Great Sinner". Dostoevsky was also a huge fan of Gogol, by the way.

It;s like the characters don't talk the way normal people talk. They have like page long dialogues. That kinda drove me nuts. idk it was a decent book.
