>Bret Estin Ellis, gay man, writes graphic depictions of a male character beheading and fucking women's severed heads in American Psycho
>The book isn't banned, and it is on many university syllabus'

>Meanwhile a white heterosexual male author writes about women in a non-threatening manner
>Gets berated by feminists, gets anthrax letters, and gets his house molotov cocktailed

What a fucked up world we live in.

Ellis isn't definitively gay, and the shitstorm he endured when AP first came out was legendary, believe me.

Actually, I've taught it in two courses: a Horror Fiction survey, and an American Culture seminar focusing on banned/challenged books.

He is definitively gay but he has avoided the subject until recently because he did not want people to interpret his work differently. He admitted to this on his podcast.

So, the book is being talked about because of the controversy it created, yet you deny that it was ever controversial due to the author being, allegedly, gay? You're a special kind of retard, aren't you?
Also, what's the second book, and what were people mad about in that case?

If you couldn't tell that Patrick Bateman was a deeply repressed homosexual and his violence towards women was an externalization of his own self hatred, you weren't reading it with the right eyes.

So, then this can hardly be the reason for him 'not getting any flak for the book', as OP seems to believe, as that book was arguabky published quite some time before anyone could say the word 'podcast' without getting weird looks.

NO! you don't mean some loser is trying to rationalize his failings by saying that privileged groups (in this case, gay people apparently) can get away with things he can't?

NOW called for a boycott of American Psycho. Probably the reason it promptly shot up the best seller list.
I heard that one of the more freedom-challenged countries (I think it might have been Australia) has to sell the book in a plain brown wrapper and proof of age must be shown to buy it.

Similar measures were attempted by the germans, but they eventually decided it was art.

Many critics condemned and excoriated Ellis at the time of the novel’s release, including several who openly admitted to not having read the novel. Ellis was dropped by his publisher, branded a vile pornographer and a vulgar writer, faced boycotts and death threats, saw his books banned and restricted in Canada and Australia, and even suffered the dubious shame of being banned from the opening of Euro Disney.

Then it was found out that he was gay, and various universities picked up his book to put on syllabus.

Just goes to show, claim that you prefer male-sodomy and you can get away with writing anything.

To a degree I agree with you. Burroughs had been writing his snuff fantasies about hanging naked teenaged boys for years to great critical acclaim. Bateman also kills quite a few males in American Psycho including a child. The feminists didn't bat an eye over that. It was only the female killings that upset them. I don't think it's his gayness that got Ellis off the hook I think it was that some perceptive feminist critics realized Ellis's satirical intentions and that writing about a misogynist character was not the same as promoting misogyny.
