Is this worth reading?

What does /lit/ think of Philip K. Dick?

I'm reading it now, it's pretty decent. I like Dick's stuff but haven't read much.

I'm not into sci-fi but I picked up the Sheep Android book anyway. it seems to be essential sci-fi for people who don't read sci-fi.

Dick paved the foundation for a genre, got handed great awards on his most well known books left and right, and is one of the only Science fiction writers to be given esteem of "great American Authors," since he got into the Library of America collection. He's more than worth reading, but nobody's worth worshiping unless you want that to be your "thing." I think he's fantastic.

It's a great concept, good execution. While I really enjoy Dick's stories, his writing and plotting can be...questionable. Keep in mind that he apparently relied on the I-Ching to plot this novel. I think it's an interesting experiment and the results are good.

I don't regret reading it, but the ending was a bit weak.

Wasn't he also a schizophreniac? That tend to show quite a lot in writing

If you're looking for a hard-hitting and realistic examination of what an alternate history America carved up by the fascist powers of WW2 would be, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a weird and philosophical sci-fi story with alternate history trappings, then it's perfect for you.

Yes, plus a side of drug abuse. Makes me wonder if his writing would have sucked otherwise.
