So, I'm like writeing this book where the Confedaracy and the Union ended the war in a tie, and they live side by side, with some rules like there being no slavery. I need help on comeing up with ways the CSA would get better and not raceist.

>> No.600131

Racism exists no matter what. I don't think confederates were inherently racist, although I'm sure many were. The Union states weren't much better in that respect. I would imagine the CSA would have had to increase manufacturing in order to compete with the USA. The south had some nice culture. It wasn't a hell hole by any means. The federal government is still too controlling, imho.

How about one of the big European powers gets involved and the Union gets overwhelmed.

Britain wanted the south to win. A book where Britain aids the south would be interesting. I don't know if the union would ever give up though. They would basically lose all of there tax revenues. The tariffs from the south were too important for them.

I don't think Britain really 'wanted' anyone to win, per se; I think they were looking out more for gaining a profit than anything. It just got harder and harder justifying supporting the south as the North took more and more of an 'anti-slavery stance'.

Then Jefferson had the brilliant idea of passing an embargo of all cotton exports, so Britain was like "Ok then, fuck off."

And OP, why would the Confederates have to change? "Get better"? Why do you think they'd even give up slavery?

But status quo ante bellum would mean a north victory, wouldn't it?

>> No.600695

Simple, international pressure from Britain and France causes the South to concede and free all slaves.

The South's status as a pariah nation would have been detrimental to their status in the developed world. They would have done it eventually. Though how they would do it, though, that's another question.

The South's economy depended very heavily on slavery and after DC posted embargoes and tariffs they went "Fuck that shit" and seceded. The Civil War's primary cause was state rights vs. federal power. The South hated how northern "Yanks" had all the power to control the nation as a whole and give the northern states an advantage.

If the war ended in a peace treaty and two nations, it'd be very difficult for the South to survive without slave labor. They might get by with "wage slaves" like Northern factories used to.

With the Union and Confederacy in such close proximity and economic competition, the Confederacy would probably continue to fester and sink. This economic pressure would send millions of immigrants from South to North.

I'm just speculating at this point but hopefully it gives you ideas, OP

Slavery was becoming less and less economic with the industrial revolution and better farming machinery. You have to feed a slave, house a slave, supervise them, keep em from escaping, hunt down escaped slaves..

Even without the war, slavery would have collapsed in a decade or less. New equipment and methods were coming about to handle farming more quickly than people could. The biggest problem facing the Confederacy as a nation would be poverty and complete lack of industrialization. There were no factories to speak of, all of that came from the North, so the means to produce or purchase farming equipment would have been needed. The war left the southern economy completely trashed, their currency was worth fuck all, and even had it been considered valid, there was nothing to back it with. Find any family that's been in the south since the 19th century and they'll show you a trunkful of useless Confederate paper.

Also, many people within the short lived Confederate government were abolitionists. Most notably; General Lee. Bobby was a classy dude.

The war ending peacefully with a treaty would need to completely change everything about Lincoln and what he stood for. He believed in holding the Union together above all else, which is why the war was as bloody and awful as it was.

Also, OP, you need to worry about your spelling before anything else.
