>socialists

>witness the ever madder howling of the libertarian dogs who are baring their fangs more and more obviously and roam through the alleys of western culture. They seem opposites of the peacefully industrious democrats and ideologists of redistribution, and even more so of the doltish philosophasters and brotherhood enthusiasts who call themselves socialists and want a “free society;” ..and even of the anti-Semitic screamers... but in fact they are at one with the lot in their thorough and instinctive hostility to every other form of society except that of the autonomous herd (even to the point of repudiating the very concepts of “master” and “servant”—ni dieu ni maître runs a socialist formula). They are at one in their tough resistance to every special claim, every special right and privilege (which means in the last analysis, every right: for once all are equal nobody needs “rights” any more). They are at one in their mistrust of punitive justice (as if it were a violation of those who are weaker, a wrong against the necessary consequence of all previous society). But they are also at one in the religion of pity, in feeling with all who feel, live, and suffer (down to the animal, up to “God”—the excess of a “pity with God” belongs in a democratic age). They are at one, the lot of them, in the cry and the impatience of pity, in their deadly hatred of suffering generally, in their almost feminine inability to remain spectators, to let someone suffer. They are at one in their involuntary plunge into gloom and unmanly tenderness under whose spell the west seems threatened by a new Buddhism. They are at one in their faith in the morality of shared pity, as if that were morality in itself, being the height, the attained height of man, the sole hope of the future, the consolation of present man, the great absolution from all former guilt. They are at one, the lot of them, in their faith in the community as the savior, in short, in the herd, in “themselves”—

Stalin was kind of big on class struggle, as are all Marxists (and as are all capitalists, even if they're loathe to admit it.) Yeah when Poland decollectivized 80% of its countryside in the late 50s, and when it Hungary, Yugoslavia and Romania joined the IMF and accrued billions in debt to Western banks and countries, no doubt that it was "socialism" and not capitalism which was at fault.

And yet as shitty as all these "socialist" measures were, there is still the fact that many people in those countries feel nostalgia for the 60s and 70s.

Ironically it's a good idea to read The Wealth of Nations as one of those things to get you into the best possible background to reading Capital, because Marx expanded upon the analyses of Smith, Ricardo, and other figures of English political economy. The capitalists, meanwhile, moved away from them (e.g. dumping the labor theory of value which formed an important part of Smith's work.)

This was the case in the GDR and other countries as well. What people wanted was some miracle cure, a "best of both worlds," the idealized consumer society of capitalism with the safety net and social cohesiveness achievable under socialism.

Well leaving aside the fact that the Stalin-era death toll is well under 20 million, one could point to the fact that colonialism brought plenty of death and destruction (most obviously the Congo Free State), the widespread decimation caused by the transatlantic slave trade (which played a major role in early capitalist development before becoming an impediment to large-scale industry and the like), the backing of murderous anti-communist regimes in Indonesia and across Central and South America (who have been accused of genocide in their quest to rid their lands of the "red menace"), etc.

Of course when you're dealing with a gigantic country known as the USSR, it's a lot easier to bring out impressive numbers of dead compared to, say, the murder of trade unionists and peasants in El Salvador, leaving aside the fact that why people died in the USSR and why they died in El Salvador were on totally different bases.

I don't see how this is relevant (unless you're arguing that England and France weren't capitalist), but I'm pretty sure German access to iron ore and other important resources in Europe itself (which it obtained in successful wars against other countries) played a big role, as did the statist policies pursued by the junkers. And yet in the end Germany was compelled to seek out international markets just as the British and French were, and it carried out genocidal policies against the Herero and Namaqua in Namibia, etc.

And, of course, the inter-imperialist First World War was the end result of all these efforts to divide the world amongst capitalist powers. The hunger for colonies was one of the things Germany sought to satiate through the conflict.

No, it didn't. American and British officials at the time made clear that the Soviets played the main role in the downfall of Nazism. It was they who not only stopped the biggest military offensive in history, but carried out a successful counter-offensive right into the capitol of the enemy.

Yes the soviets played a role, but that role is not as large as you make it out to be. American industrial might played a much larger role in victory.

It's ironic you posted that picture considering the Orthodox church was heavily persecuted and Stalin himself was an Atheist.

I know Stalin himself was an atheist. But freedom of religion did exist in the USSR, for Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists (who inhabited the eastern regions), etc. There was an especially obvious revival of religious practice in the 1940s, when the policy of the Orthodox Church hierarchy was no longer hostile.

Russia turned the tide. If the Nazis weren't so invested in the east, US/UK forces would have had a much harder time breaking in.

Yes, you. US presence in the European theater was negligible and, of course, late, which is one half of the reason why they took over the world economy right after (the other being no loss of land and industry). The people of the USSR and China were the heroes of the WWII.

Yeah the only true revolutionaries are those who stab actual revolutionary processes in the back (Makhnovists, Trotskyists, POUMists, Khrushchevites, Eurocommunists...)
