I know this thread is unlikely to go as planned in light of the recent meme-ing but: Where do I start with Will Self?

But, in terms of prose, start with either his short story collections, The Book of Dave or How The Dead Live. Umbrella and Shark are amazing but I wonder if I'd have enjoyed them so much without getting a feel for his style first.

You see a nice progression when you read his stuff in chronological order. Book of Dave is my favourite, How the Dead Live is good as well but simpler and less mature in style and substance. I haven't read his last two but he seems to get better and better. People seem to like his new one so grab that by all means.
