>Write a few incredibly difficult but critically acclaimed books

>proceed to publish a book of pure gibberish

>People will now give you the benefit of the doubt and assume they can't understand it because they're not smart enough or haven't analyzed hard enough

>everybody is now pressured into praising the book as if it were the emperor's new clothes

>intellectuals continue wasting away years of their lives even half a century after your death

Is this the greatest long con in the history of literature?

I just want to save you while there's still something left to save (whoa, whoa)
That's when I told her I love you girl
But I'm not the answer for the questions that you still have (whoa, whoa)

imagine if there were a private 4chan, all the memes and injokes the product of one mind
how to understand it? no community
now imagine this mind is a literary genius and it spends decades preparing for this ultimate, insane task
finnegans wake
it's real, it's good, but it doesn't give a fuck

But then what's the point of the book? who cares if it's consistent or an actual realized universe. any effort you spend analyzing it will not have any worth in the real world

and I thought people who memorize trivia from the silmarillion as if it were a history book were autistic

I know this is a troll thread but I truely do believe Joyce wrote FW just to fuck with people. the real question is if he did so out of bitterness or affection.

>> No.5952447

This is the truth. You don't know that it's a prank until after you've spent the time reading and analyzing it, but by that time you're too far down the path and you don't want to admit it anymore. Because admitting it means facing the fact that you wasted years of your life. So now you do the only sensible thing: artificially inflate the value of your useless knowledge by hailing it as the greatest piece of English literature of all time

As "boku" to /a/ and "toads" to /v/ is Finnegans Wake to /lit/. They recommend it for their sport.

who gives a fuck about analyzing it?
just read it
the idea is that it will "feel" correct because it incorporates millennia of layered cultural references, like how people speak using bible references they aren't even aware of
it's a worthy project and fun to read if you stop caring about understanding it

Firstly, does it matter if it is a con or not?

Because if the only person to know or decide whether it is a con or not is to be Joyce, then what he says is entirely untrustworthy.

On Ulysses:
"The pity is the public will demand and find a moral in my book — or worse they may take it in some more serious way, and on the honor of a gentleman, there is not one single serious line in it."

"If I gave it all up immediately, I'd lose my immortality. I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality."

"The demand that I make of my reader is that he should devote his whole Life to reading my works."

It's pretty plain to see then that Joyce, the creator of Finnegans Wake, perceives what is considered to be his masterpiece in a manner as frivolous and light as to make his motives in its creation irrelevant.

"b-but that's only what he said, what did he REALLY think?"
Now it does not matter: if what he really meant to do with Finnegans Wake was never uttered in any manner, it is of no consequence because no one will ever know. That's about the same as saying no one should take the Bible seriously because whoever wrote it thought at some point "lol gun make fags think somebody came back to life gun b fun"

So, now it doesn't matter whether its a con or not, whether there's a point or not, or whether it makes any sort of traditional "sense" or not.

Is there now any less reason to read, study, and analyze it?
