ITT: Fantasy

Right now I'm reading the A Song Of Ice And Fire series by George RR Martin. I really like it and thus I wonder, what are some other fantasy series that are similar to ASOIAF that I should read once I'm finished with this one?

>> No.5936503

the Belgariad

it at least doesn't pretend to be original and has more charm

>> No.5936517

>>5936503

Martin never claimed the series was "original." He said it was a fantasy jerk off to the War of the Roses from the start.

>> No.5936554

I personally find it hard to read another series after aSoIaF, Tolkien fills the void somewhat, but it's not the same

> inb4 HURR Tolkien > GRR Martin

Malazan book of the Fallen. Best fabtasy series out there in my opinion. Just sublime.

Malazan Book of the Fallen.
I'm not sure why, but I fancy that series over Tolkien and Martin.

Is it bad that I found it extremely difficult to get engrossed in and read?

I want to because of the good things I hear, but I can't stick with it.

I was the same, It took me over a year to get past the first book and a half, I just kept dropping it and rereading, but by the end of the second book I was completely hooked. Well worth persevering with.

I see what you mean.
Things aren't really explained, and sometimes they're explained a looong time after they were first mentioned.

And sometimes they are only explained in a way without ever referencing the event directly and you only pick it up and marvel at its brilliance on the reread...

>reread
Will get there eventually, though I at book 3 thought about rereading book 1, and at book 4 really felt the need to reread book 2.
I see a pattern...

It's quite frustrating when you recognize something but just can't fully remember what he wrote earlier about it.

The Black Company books. Great military-fantasy.

Also check out A Shadow in Summer, or the Accursed Kings series. Both are heavy on political intrigue.

I'd also recommend Captive Prince, but there are a lot of homosexual relations going on in there. If that doesn't bother you, give it a go.

Black Company and Malazan were both inspired by that board game, right?

At at book 5 you are transported to a whole new land and a story that takes place before the events of the first book! Yay! Just keep at it and by the time you are finished you will just want to reread and the reread is sooo much better.

Can't wait, really.
Trying to watch LOTR now, but I can't stop thinking about book 4 (currently at book 4 in this book). It's within a hand's reach, but I can't really be arsed to read now.

This isn't the place to get good fantasy recommendations because despite anonymity the posters here are very image-conscious and will only recommend tastemaker-approved fantasy.

Hythrun Chronicles by Jennifer Fallon.

It's like a condensed Game of Thrones, with coherent plot and better prose.

I don't know why I keep plugging my favourite fantasy author no one knows... but I will.

most of people who write fantasy write it in a dream fulfilling way, often with self inserts and stuff, it seems that men hardly can tolerate such books written by women

Hmmm, as someone else who really hates women, far more than I care about writing, I also agree with this.

>> No.5938733

>>5938723
ohhhhh.... I see. So if it's written by a girl, it would contain self insert GIRL things.

Well, that's kind of retarded since no author is literally dumb enough to do that for three books...Right?

I care more about the writing anyway. What if the protag is a dude and it's well written?

>> No.5938766

>>5938733
It's simply a matter of the female being intellectually, emotionally, and physically inferior which in turn, would render the book she conceives to be doomed as inferior to anything a male can create. Be my guest if you'd like to spend your time reading a few pages to see for yourself.

I'm reading it right now, just to see. It doesn't seem all that bad. Nothing special, but not horrible.

Besides, Frankenstein is STILL one of my all time favorite books.

terrible indeed. you just know basically the entire story line after reading 10 pages

>the One has bad childhood, masking his talent
>someone noticed his hidden talent when he is kid in mid teens
>something something rumors about evil
>gets trained and turns out to be excellent
>he is local hero and shit
>thing take a turn for the bad
>omnipresent evil force threatens the world (no one ever noticed this evil until the One has completed his training)
>the One might not be strong enough
>oh wait he is, possible help from gods or fate or something to force the story

Her early work is really solid because her publisher (Voyager) are excellent at fantasy, and probably kept her in line. I have to admit her last completed series had an irritatingly feminist protagonist, to the point where it even pissed off my girlfriend.

It's hilarious how much this fits Mistborn
except that the bad guy already "won" before the novel, and the main character actually isn't the chosen one
