ITT: Author photos

Say you were in a position where your publishers were asking you to have a proffesional photo taken for your online profile and also to be included in your book, how would you pose?

Doesn't the idea of having your photo taken make you extremely anxious?

It's like you're consciously portraying yourself in a way that you know and the reader knows and the reader knows you know the reader knows is ultimately false but which makes you look interesting or deep.

I mean looking away from the camera is such a meme thing now that people will think you're trying to look deep as hell a-la-Franzen

But looking at the camera is offputting to me, as people make assumptions based on how you're looking which serve to affect your sales.

Doing some sort of goofy photo where you're in your bed looking sleepy or in a toilet like Tao Lin's photo is obviously less serious but can also be so unserious as to make people think you don't take your writing seriously, or that you as a human being should not be taken seriously

i used to watch america's top model with an ex-gf. i learned how to make a good "face" for photos. it's a matter of practice in front of a mirror.

but obviously you get a photographer friend to take the pic because they know what they're doing. they'll take a bunch of shots and help you pick the best ones.
