Where to start with Leibniz?

I picked up an old everyman's library copy of his philosophical writings. I don't know if there's something in print that's comparable, but look into Hackett or Cambridge to see what they offer.

In any case, here's what offered in what I have:

The Monadology
Principles of Nature...
On the Ultimate Origination of Things
Correspondence- Arnauld and Clarke
New Essays on the Human Understanding

The Monadology is as close to a definitive statement as it gets but a lot of keys to understanding Leibniz are in the other texts. It might be fruitful to actually read the list from the bottom up.

Also, Jolley's introduction to Leibniz is well regarded.

I've read it and I've been made to believe that what Leibniz published on optimism was insincere hackwork meant to flatter his patrons but that he actually was a profound and original thinker if you know where to look. Do you know anything about that?

What you need to know about Leibniz is that he has written masses and masses. He had correspondence with a lot of people and a lot of people which are still famous today. Editing his work is still an ongoing process.

You can imagine Leibniz, roughly spoken, in Japanese tradition regarding his nowhere mentioned first principle harmony.

Theodicy is known as one of his main works. I'd start, however, with one of his correspondences. If there is an English one I'd start with one with Malebranche.

Start with these, way better than the ones in the OP.
