oh my god man pale king changed my life. he plays his style so close to the chest that its practically transcendant-whatever-amazing.

read it at a difficult time in my life; the places he went to try and maintain humanity was inspiring

read it man,
artistically its god-tier, but its about being human, and not in any bs kind of way. if youre bored by the purposeless rattling off of facts (it is purposeless, but it follows the aesthetical line absolutely through til it comes out the other side as something amazing) then skip to the 100ish page story at the end about the woman talking to the IRS man in the bar about her experience in a mental ward. that part alone makes the book worth reading

such a great book. what amazes me about infinite jest is how great it is despite being so imperfect as a book. it just does so many things.

but Pale King is near perfect as a book but also as a human statement. its really special

>> No.5904330

>>5904306
the Pale King is legitimately amazing, i'm reading it right now and I love it. It's seriously a fucking tragedy that he will never finish it.

>> No.5904340

>>5904330
I have not looked into how it became arranged and publised, but the ending of it is as fitting/perfect as it could have been for DFW... maybe not as much in the context of PK itself, but in infinite jest he talks about the woman you see before you die, which is his mother, with whom he makes a deal that he cant remember when he was born.. this to me has to be the woman at the end of PK, like his mother but also way more ethereal and shit.. .it was pretty fucking devastating with the interview in the dark office and the description of her is really one of the most incredible things ive evr read....

your thoughts on this? my friends who read it didnt seem to notice the connection

>> No.5904359

Yeah The Pale King is better than Infinite Jest, or at least it contains his best writing. The aforementioned Meredith Rand chapter, also Chris Fogle's tale of how he came to work in the IRS. Just an amazing novel through-and-through.

What, no. The main plot had nowhere near even had time to seriously get off the ground, there's no ending. And the only editing done was to make sure names were consistent and stuff.

You have no idea what you're talking about. TPK was supposed to be about an intra-IRA conflict between those who wanted automation and those who wanted to keep doing things manually, and the automation group would try to steal the secrets of the guy who hovers when he concentrates. The book barely got to the first of those, and not at all to the second.
